Spotlight: Babbo Pizzaria

Just because you are famous and have a cooking show does not mean you have a great restaurant. On a recent walk along the waterfront we stumbled upon Mario Batali's new restaurant in Fort Point. While the service and ambiance were great, the food was average. The tastes were commercial more like Olive Garden, than a quaint neighborhood restaurant.

Morning walk

Cindy discovered a wonderful walking path along the harbor. Beautiful views of the city. Below is the site where we celebrate the Boston tea party, I think we are still fighting the same battle today.
There are some interesting restaurants along the way
Beautiful view back at the financial district, and the North End.
The commons is decorated with 37,000 flags in memory of each Massachusetts fallen serviceman.

Moore's Law

50 years ago Gordon Moore (cofounder of Intel) predicted that for the next 10 years, the number of transistors on a chip would double every year. He later adjusted his prediction to a doubling of every 2 years. If Gordon gives you a stock tip, you should probably take it, cause his incredible prediction was right on, and continued to be so for the next 40 years. Doubling every year is a powerful force. If you doubled the number of pennies you give me for 50 years,  I'd have 1,125,899,906,842,623 pennies. I suspect you would have to pay me in large bills cause there would be no pennies left in circulation.

Unfortunately about 10 years ago, the speed of chips stopped increasing at the same rate. What does this mean? Even on your smart phone instead of a single computer, you have 4. Each one not really faster than the ones of prior years. We must distribute the tasks among computers. With great challenges comes great opportunity.

Two by sea

Went out on kayaks on the Charles this morning. Then back to the community boating docks where they were giving sailing lessons, and free hot dogs. I'd call that perfect.

Waze

Most apps are crap. Waze is becoming my favorite navigation app. Like apple and google maps it helps you get from a to b, and does a great job with traffic. Unlike either of those much of the data is sourced through the users of the app. If you and others are driving slow on a particular stretch it figures there is a traffic issue. You can also enter pot holes, broken down cars, and police locations. So as you are driving along you get all that data. Great voice directions. I enjoy a calming voice telling me I will be in traffic for 8 minutes. It's free, fun and helpful.

Spotlight: Franklin Cafe

Just around the corner is a unique gastro pub. Imagine a neighborhood saloon serving upscale cocktails, and comfort food. I had turkey meatloaf with herbed mash taters and out of control collard greens. Cindy had pork roast with black eyed peas and collards. The black eyed peas were perhaps the best thing we ate. Check out some of their recipes on you tube. Here is one on making gnocchi

Mis Fear

Forget Ebola, terrorist or even the threat of artificial intelligence. Our biggest predator is the fork.

Lost in Cambridge

It is possible for me to ride my bike to work. Much of it is on the Minuteman bike trail. The (theoretical) beauty of it is that I can take my bike to the end of the red line at the ale wife station and make most of the trip on a bike path. This sunday I thought I would ride a bit on the trail and because of the light traffic just ride to the ale wife station. All went well getting there, but coming home, there was a street festival in Harvard, and well I got a tad lost, finally made it home. A glorious day on the bike.

New Grocery Store!

In the old Filene's basement a new grocery has opened. Roche brothers is an urban store with a grand selection of fresh produce, cheese and meats. The shelves are gorgeous and have selections not found in other local stores. Just outside the t stop, but for a flat $10 they will deliver your groceries in less than 2 hours.
